O TÄLER WEIT, O HÖHEN (Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy / Joseph von Eichendorff)
ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE (Frederick Loewe / Alan Jay Lerner)
Solo piano has always been—and remains—the starting point of my musical journey. To me, it is the most beautiful form of introspection.
In my creative process, composition and improvisation walk side by side. Improvisation is that state of freedom which—like a lucid dream—gives space to all emotions, to memories, and above all, to visions. It is the most fluid form of expressing feeling through music, and it is essential to the creation of my compositions.
Playing solo piano does not feel like a state of solitude—quite the opposite: I believe that music, as a universal language, can make any sense of loneliness vanish. Its sound offers us support and the protection to enter our inner world and wander through it as if through a park. Sometimes, encroaching darkness prevents us from seeing exactly where we are going; in those moments, there is only one thing to do: trust. Piano playing thrives on trust. It is a choral togetherness, a plurality of voices, a collective horizontality.
Improvising pianists draw on this wondrous musical language because it holds immense power. It never exhausts itself and is full of hidden messages. I love speaking through it—freely, honestly, and with many layers of meaning.
Paul Bernewitz
“Beautifully painted music by a pianist with a perfect touch and a deep enjoyment of harmonic possibilities.” RACHEL ECKROTH (USA)
